Or do we pity them because they are in a terrible situation, and because they are being used to measure our moral progress, while eliding attention to the very real threats LGBTQ people currently face, with new anti-queer legislation splashed across the news every other day?

The cast gamely tries to keep things going but even with a fairly brief minute run-time this oftentimes drags. The idyll of the cabin ought to contrast with the horror of what the zealots are asking the family to do but somehow it never does. There are plenty of bits of the movie which, in strict isolation, look like they should work but it never coheres into anything.
Between shots, they asked me thoughtful questions about the book, and they were beyond generous with their time and attention. Getting to chat with them was one of my favorite parts of the set visit.
